
Education for the over 20,000 impoverished residents of La Carpio, Costa Rica currently ends after middle school, and the over 300 students who graduate from La Carpio's only school each year are forced to halt their studies. While a small percentage of students are able to afford transportation to high schools outside of the community, most cannot, and therefore never get the opportunity to study again.
Thanks to Carlos Sandoval Garcia and Karen Masis of the University of Costa Rica, this is about to change! Carlos, Karen and their team have been working tirelessly over the past year to open La Carpio's first high school, allowing a new generation of youth to continue their studies and giving them hope for a better future. The school is scheduled to welcome its first class of 120 students in February 2008.
